March Flower Momma Message: Faith Over Fear

A sweet friend of mine asked me the other day: “If you could summarize 2022 so far in just three words, what words would you choose?”

The first thing that popped into my head was Faith Over Fear.

In a season of grief comes change - Change from what was to what now is

I don’t know about you, but with change comes a lot of emotion. I explained to my friend that each day has been an emotional rollercoaster, and if one day isn’t a rollercoaster, then I brace myself in anticipation of the next “wave”. However, I have to remind myself to keep going back to what I know and believe is true, not just what I am feeling at the moment.

Momma, how do you handle fear when you are in a valley?

John Piper once said, “A path of righteousness is a right path followed with the right attitude.”

Ugh. Heart check. Full stop.

When I am filled with fear, how are my emotions driving my attitude and actions?

It can look like anger, control, isolation or anxiety and worry. My struggle is usually trying to control things that are out of my hands accompanied by a headache and stomach ache while snapping everyone’s head off - It’s great for everyone…clearly.

Maybe your valley is grief. Maybe it’s rejection, depression, divorce, illness, infertility, or longing (just to name a few).

If you are struggling with fear and anxiety in a valley, here are a few things that are helping me! I hope they help you too!

  1. Be still.

I get it. The quiet can be scary. The thoughts start. Emotions come. But stillness increases our awareness of His presence, and when He’s near, peace comes along with Him. If you don’t have margin in your day-to-day to get still and sit with Him, I’d encourage you to take a step back and pray about what needs to change to allow you that time. This is also something that is essential while on a mountaintop, too! There is no substitute for time with Jesus. Practicing being still in His presence before entering a valley season can better equip your heart for battle. Be still, read scripture, quiet your heart, and press into your Shepherd. Again, don’t just wait for the valley seasons to get still. Lay the faith foundation before heartache hits.

2.            Sing Praise.

Belt it. Crank up the worship. When we sing His praises, we are drawing near to Him, and He is drawing near to us in return. When He is near, His goodness follows.

I wanted to help you here, so we created a playlist for you on Spotify called The Flower Momma Playlist. Check it out, and sing, sing, sing!

Valley seasons don’t last, but momma, strong women do!

Take Heart, Daughter

Here’s a Fun fact about Valentine’s Day in our home:

My husband’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day (…and he married a florist), so in our home, during the busiest season of all, we celebrate what we call ValenHines Day! It’s a fun play on our last name, plus, to me, it’s a way to make our Valentine’s Day a little more about my husband!

For February’s letter, I have felt such a weight praying through what to talk about for the month of Love with you ladies! This little box is to help you celebrate your wins and to remember Jesus’ goodness and faithfulness each and every month. Regarding our relationships, I think we, in our fallible human nature, can often times get so wrapped up in noticing what our significant other is doing wrong. We see where they just keep falling short no matter how many times the issues are addressed!

This month, however, I want you to celebrate and remember not only the Lord’s faithfulness and goodness in your life but the faithfulness and goodness in your marriages as well. Last month we gave you a "good jar" to help you spot the goodness in your day-to-day! This month, find the good in who the Lord has placed in your life! Our spouses play a huge role in not only our lives but in our kiddo’s lives, too, and there’s plenty of good to see if you look hard enough!

What I try to think of often when I am around my friends as we talk about our lives is the Proverbs 31 wife describes in Song of Solomon Chapter 5. This biblical example is a reminder to have people around you that are for you and your spouse. In the chapter, the woman never bad mouths her spouse to her friends. She doesn't pounce on his weaknesses. She points out what she loves such as his strengths. She doesn't list his weaknesses in comparison to her strengths either. She is an expert in his goodness.

Momma, I know marriage is hard. Some days we are on the hill tops and everything is SO GOOD, which makes it easy to find the good. Other seasons can be incredibly challenging and dark. In those seasons, it's especially important to remember to surround yourself with an uplifting community and pray that the Lord shows you the good you once saw in your spouse. I also know some marriages have ended, and to those of you, "Take heart, daughter”.

Happy Valentine's Day, Mommas.

S3 Anne Harrison | Stones Of Remembrance

I don't know about you, but sometimes I can be super forgetful. That's why in this episode I'm talking with my friend Anne Harrison about why it's so critical for us to be intentional about having visual reminders of God's goodness and faithfulness as part of our routine. Anne is the Director of Women’s Ministries at First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, TX, and a gifted teacher who explains how people in the Bible used stones as visual reminders. She also offers some advice about building community in drought seasons.

S3 Rachael Wade | Why We Are Called To Remember

This week I’m excited to introduce you to Rachael Wade. She’s a San Francisco-based wife, mom of two, and teacher who is passionate about encouraging and equipping women with the word of God. Rachael also started the Olive Us community - a sisterhood of every day women of faith who recount to remember the goodness and faithfulness of God. In our conversation, she explains why it’s so important for us not just to remember God’s faithfulness, but to also celebrate it. She also shares how keeping a “blessings box” has helped her family remember the goodness of God and offers some encouragement about how we celebrate even through the hard seasons by starting small.

S3 Jenny Lee Hines | Let's Celebrate This Season!

Welcome to Season 3, Flower Mommas! I’m not gonna lie, my family and I have been going through a lot over the past few months. But one thing it’s taught me is that even when there are hard times, it’s important to celebrate the times God has shown up and proven His goodness – that’s what we’ll be talking about in season 3. I’m also excited to go deeper with you this season, both in faith and in community. Lastly, I just want to encourage you that if you’re in a hard season, know that God’s got you. He is good and faithful and He loves you. You are seen, adored, and valued by Him.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul.

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

In this season of life, I am walking through grief.

It comes in waves and it can be so frustrating when it hits. Grief is a funny thing though. In these times, I always feel more close to the Lord than I do in the day to day of the "Good Life". Where it makes me physically sick sometimes to think of my sweet seester being gone, I am also grateful for this time with Jesus. Being able to just sit with Him and listen for how He is speaking in this season.

At her funeral, Psalm 23 was read. A well known passage of scripture that kept popping up through different avenues after the fact. So I finally did more digging. I wanted The Lord to imprint on my heart what He wanted for my life in this season through His Word.

Slowing down and taking in this passage has already comforted me in more ways than one. Dusting off the "I already know that verse" and taking it in slowly. There is so much I could share already on what I have been taking in, but I am going to park it at the beginning.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul."

I think there are examples that the Lord gives us in The Bible that if we take it literal, it does us so much good. Now, I am not saying to go sacrifice a cow, but for me, literally going out in the country in the midst of this grief and laying down in a green pastures (well, greenish right now, let’s be real: it’s winter in North Texas) allowed for me to look up instead of down and around at my circumstances. He helped restore my soul in that moment. I know it’s not a one and done fix. That I will have to keep coming to Him and allowing Him to restore me over and over in whatever headspace I am in.

This month I want to encourage you - find the green pasture, find the still waters in the quiet. Allow Him to hang out with you and restore you going into this new year.

Happy New Year, Momma.

Come Thou Fount

Have you stopped to think about just how much happens in a year? I was scrolling through our Instagram feed the other day looking for a picture I posted to show a client. I kept realizing “Oh yeah! I forgot we did that this year too!”

As a creative and businesswoman, I can truly get bogged down in measuring success, but every year I love to reflect on the story in 1 Samuel 7. The Israelites in that story were no longer slaves in bondage in Egypt, but they also were not in Canaan (The Promised Land) yet.

In verse 12 it says they took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer. I want to sit right here with you all, Flower Momma’s! Whether you had the best year of your life or the worst, life isn’t free of it’s challenges, but where we can find comfort is in the meaning of Ebenezer - "This far the Lord has helped us". He has brought you this far, friend. He isn't going anywhere. You are not alone. You are not forgotten. Where has he helped you this year? What moments did he show up for you? Celebrate and remember, sweet momma.

“Come, thou Fount of every blessing,

tune my heart to sing thy grace;

streams of mercy, never ceasing,

call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet,

sung by flaming tongues above.

Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,

mount of thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer;

hither by thy help I'm come;

and I hope, by thy good pleasure,

safely to arrive at home.”

Love you all! Merry Christmas

Are You Having Crazy Faith In The Midst Of Chaos?

November marks the beginning of the holidays, and man they can be tough. From running around like a chicken with your head cut off and making the kids Christmas parties, to suffering well in a season where people may be missing from your tribe. Maybe a death occurred, maybe tragedy struck physically and things are just disrupted from what use to be normal. But you are trying your darnest to love your people well.

But Jenny, how do I suffer well?

Let's talk about it. Here are some tangible tips that I hope help you this season or in hopes that this helps you love on someone in your corner.

  • Do not suffer or struggle alone. Be in community. Let people in. Even before the hard times hit. Dig deep and train up for when the hard times hit. (Heb. 10:24-25)

  • Physically confess you are in deep waters. Yes, God knows all we are going through, but speak it aloud and allow Him to hover over you. (Gen. 1:2)

  • Do not Pray in seasons of extraordinary need without the value of linking arms with a trusted circle of fellow believers. Confess your broken heart. Be vulnerable. It is okay to not be okay. (Psalm 34.18)

  • Remember it takes release of pride to reveal suffering, struggle and needs. There is extraordinary freedom when vulnerability is met with suffering well. Confess your weakness. When His sanctifying work is met with the reality of our depravity as humans, we are surrounded with His loving kindness and are able to SEE it! (2 Cor. 12:9)

All in all friend, have hope. If you only choose one thing this season, have hope and find the good in each day. With hope comes faith, and having crazy faith helps you remember you are so loved.

Until next time!

P.S. I hope the towel reminds you of this when you are in the kitchen - which we all know we will be at Thanksgiving! And if you are about to lose it at any point- grab the chocolate. Always chocolate.

S2 Jenn Jett | Finding Rest For The Weary

Join us on the podcast today as we talk about building a community through vulnerability, how God redeemed Jenn's marriage, and her heart for dreamers and doers that lead to the founding of Camp Well.

I encourage you to share this episode with a friend who struggles with rest and remember to take time this week to be intentional about resting because on the other side of rest is joy.

S1 Savannah Wheeler | 4 Things To Strive For In Friendship

Jenny sits down with long time friend Savannah Wheeler to talk about friendship. One of the greatest unnecessary blessings in our lives. Some people don’t get to experience the truest versions of friendships because they don’t truly understand what it takes and the reasons you should maintain friendships with the people in your life. Or maybe, they simply just don’t understand how to be a good friend. Putting Jesus at the center of their friendship has been the foundation for their longtime sisterhood. Jenny often refers to Savannah as the “Jonathan to her David”. They teach you the qualities they look for when finding new friends, and how to help push your friends to find their strength in God. Enjoy some girl time with Jenny and Sav and learn their 4 pillars of friendship.

S1 Cari Trotter | Can Grief and Joy Coexist?

We are so excited for this episode on The Flower Momma Podcast. Jenny sits down with Cari Trotter, someone that Jenny has looked up to for YEARS. They take a deep dive into personal growth, their love for Jesus and finding light in the hardest seasons.

Jenny opens up about how she has looked up to Cari for years, there will be happy tears, lots of laughs and good conversation, you might even walk out feeling closer to the Lord.

The whole Jameson's Team did!

Cari is strong, independent, and has a fire inside of her burning for Jesus brighter than anything we have ever seen. She walks us through her difficult diagnosis this year and how she leans on God through it. She teaches us the strength it takes to hand everything to Jesus and take ourselves out of the driver seat. “Just let go” show up for yourself, your kids, your tribe. Understand that God knows you, and has a plan for you. She tells us about her kids, and teaches us how to help our own kids find their individuality.
